It was a moment Dr. Ngor would have relished with pride and delight…on a brilliant, starry Summer night in New York on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at the US Open tennis grand slam quarterfinals.

Dr. Ngor’s great-niece, 8-year-old Brooke Demetri (daughter of Dr. Ngor’s niece Sophia and her husband, Adam Demetri) was selected as one of eight boys and girls who inaugurated a new US Open tradition – kids singing during the two-week tournament. Auditions were held earlier at Radio City Music Hall, with judges including Broadway (“Chicago”) and TV star Bebe Neuwirth, “Lillith” in the popular “Cheers” sitcom.

Young Brooke, already a stage vet in elementary school and Long Island amateur theatre (she’s played Dorothy in “Wizard of Oz” and will star in a production of “Annie” in 2008), sang “America the Beautiful” a cappella, appearing at 10 pm, after Venus Williams defeated Jelena Jankovic and just before men’s World #1 Roger Federer followed Brooke onto Center Court of Arthur Ashe Stadium to defeat Andy Roddick.

Brooke’s bright-eyed rendition of “America the Beautiful” – pitch perfect, sung flawlessly, and beamed on the Tennis Center’s gigantic screens – was cheered by the 24,000+ tennis fans in the world’s largest tennis venue before she even belted her final note! Then, with an assured little curtsy, she said “Bye” and exited with a wave that engaged the entire bowl-shaped stadium, earning an even louder ovation.

Three days later, on Saturday, September 8, without missing a beat or a day of school, Our Miss Brooke went on to win a Gold Medal (in her age group) in the 2007 Middle Atlantic Figure Skating Championships, held at the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers.

More recently, the multi-talented 8-year-old has auditioned for two upcoming Broadway musicals: “Shrek” and “Billy Elliot”. Her great-uncle Haing Ngor would be proud indeed!
